It looks like I'll be moving to Charleston from Seattle and I'm hoping for a little advice as to what neighborhoods I should be looking into. I don't have to be in the heart of downtown living, but hopefully somewhere that is young, vibrant, and bustling. Maybe an area where you can walk out your door and find plenty to do? I'd appreciate any advice and suggestions! Thanks!
James Island, Mount Pleasant, Downtown Charleston, Windermere/Avondale section of West Ashley, Park Circle, etc. There are plenty of neighborhoods and areas with various themes and offerings. The above questions should help us narrow that down for you.
The plan is to rent for a while until I get a feel for the place, maybe topping out at the $750 range. At some point I'd like to purchase a work/live, artist space type of arrangement preferably in a eclectic part of town. Thanks for the help, those suggestions will help narrow down that real estate book!
Of the areas DJ listed- I think that price point is going to push you towards Park Cirlce (North Charleston) unless you are willing to take on a roommate. We really don't have the amount of live/work spaces or lofts many would assume. You might find an attic or grarage apartment in Riverland Terrace (James Island) or Windemere (West Alshey) as well.
I say that assuming you do not want to be in an apartment complex.

Please let me preface this by saying that I am not a local, but will be relocating Dec 2011. I know exactly what you are looking for, but in your price range, you will most likely need a couple of roomates. Living downtown, near shopping, bars, restaurants, cafe's, etc., is expensive (like Seattle)! My husband and I will be relocating with 2 teens and plan to rent a house in "suburbia" (Mt Pleasant area) for the schools, but once they are off to college, we will live downtown because we prefer to be around the action, not the suburbs. Charleston is a beautiful city, but night and day from Seattle, just so you are aware of this! Good luck in your search!
