In today (Monday's) Post and Courier, they had an article about Southwest and when they plan to come. They will start flights in spring 2011, like what we expected. Chicago (Midway) and Baltimore-Washington (BWI) are the favorites to be the first destinations.
Chicago is a favorite because of the Boeing plant (Boeing is based in Chicago).
I've started seeing some ads on local channels like CSS announcing that Southwest is coming soon. An announcement should be coming soon on routes and dates.

Announcement is currently scheduled for October 5th.
I'm in agreement with IrishSa on this; given the fact that they've essentially frozen their fleet size and aren't buying new aircraft except for replacement purposes, Baltimore & Chicago would appear to be locks, as well as either Phoenix or Las Vegas for West Coasters such as myself (L.A.) since they discontinued their coast-to-coast nonstops (LAX/BWI & OAK/BWI, just to name a couple) a few years ago.
Service from a Deep South city (Orlando, Tampa or Fort Lauderdale would appear to be quite likely, as well as Houston.
By comparison, when they entered the Minneapolis market eighteen months ago, they only flew between MSP/MDW to allow their passengers to connect to roughly half of the cities they serve, and later added nonstops to Denver, Phoenix & St. Louis from MSP, and that's still the case today.
They'll also start serving Greensville/Spartanburg SC & Newark, NJ, as well as Charleston come March 12th or thereabouts, with the service to Newark contingent on the Continental/United merger receiving regulatory approval before November 30th.
Service to/from Newark will commence with Continental's release of 36 slots, or 18 roundtrips if their merger with United goes through without a hitch.
That would be interesting news if it were to occur. You could have flights to several major cities, and if they got flights on March 12 for both cities, that would bring in most of the spring tourism season, along with Spoleto and other events.
Chicago is a favorite because of Boeing's headquarters being there and all of the business that will come through there.
Yes it will. Southwest will still fly in when it's supposed to, with maybe a little delay, but flights to Atlanta will definitely be in the offing. This will challenge Delta.
When Southwest moves into Atlanta, expect flights into most of AirTran's Southern cities plus the Upstate and Charleston.
It looks like the announcement will come next week, since Southwest updated their schedule to April 25, and Charleston and GSP are not on the list yet. Maybe later today or next Tuesday.
I thought the announcement from Southwest was to be on October 5th. Anyone know when it's expected? Just want to book a flight out of Charleston if they plan on flying to Boston or Providence
