Ok, so I may be getting a job in Charleston and have a few questions.

1) How is the Economy?
2) Is Charleston growing or slowly on the decline and what is the future like?
3) I currently live in Columbus, OH, what should I expect from Charleston?
4) Is it worth it?

Depends.

1. WV has weathered the financial crisis of other states via their requirement of a balanced budget. Jobs are by no means a dime a dozen but it isn't depressed.
2. I feel the future has more of an upside than downside but I look for steady rather than increase or decrease.
3. My humble opinion: living in a community is so different for everybody but I feel you get out of it what you put into it. Don't know what you are looking for in a life so it is hard to say what to expect.
4. For a job today, yes, it is worth it. Whatever "worth it" means.

Much more information from you will give you more responses that will answer specifics.

I'm just looking at the future of Charleston. I don't want to move there and have the economy tank and then I'm out of a job. I like Columbus a lot but I could potentially get a government job in Charleston and like I said I'm not trying to get laid off. I am willing to move, that is not a problem, I'd just like to know what the future holds as far as growth or decline and what to expect.

It's the state capital. It's not going anywhere. The national unemployment rate for government employee's is about 3% so I would say that keeping a government job in a state capital was pretty good.

It really just depends on the person. I love Charleston because it has a lot for being small, but yet its not a cookie cutter city. It is truly unique compared to other state capitals. It's not Columbus, but it has its own vibe and taste. I'd say it is worth it. I've lived in the Charleston area for my whole life (except this past year studying in Florida). The economy is improving, but its not booming. I can honestly say that I feel it will pick up within this decade. We are already seeing a growth in almost every area of our economy (healthcare, retail, industry, education, etc...). Plus gov jobs are pretty consistent here.

Yeah, I understand it doesn't have all the amenities as Columbus has. Like I said before, I just don't want to move and the economy tank and then I'm out of a job. I have been trying to do research on apartments/townhomes near the area, no luck haha I have been reading the forums though on areas. So what are the things you guys do in Charleston?

Well I suppose it depends on your personality. I'm kind of weird and can find amusement just by strolling the streets and popping in and out of my favorite places. An example would be the locally owned Taylor Bookstore/cafe on Capital St. It is truly a one of a kind place in downtown. The mall is rather fun if you like shopping, I'm not a shopper but do enjoy going in and watching others. If you like COSI in Columbus you would probably like the Clay Center in Charleston. It isn't as big as COSI, but is is nice and is always showing different Imax films in their planetarium. They also have an art gallery and an impressive performing arts auditorium. There is always good entertainment coming into the city, anything from Trans Siberian Orchestra, Stomp, Cats, to Brad Paisley or The Harlem Globe Trodders. And the list keeps going because the city has a good event centers. The Civic Center is always hosting big events, but it is a little dated. They do plan on remodeling it though, its just a matter of $$$. The parks here are fun and beautiful. Coonskin park is just a short drive out of the city and has a nice environment. Like I said it really just depends on what you like to do because there is really a little bit of everything, plus Wild and Wonderful West Virginia is at your back door. You can literally drive less than an hour and be in World Class Recreation.

Ya, I mean Im an outside guy and could make the best of anything. I understand it won't have the same amenities as columbus (I'm sure going to miss chipotle) haha but like I said I would make the best of it for sure. I just don't know much about the city
