Update on the project. Thankfully, the design has been changed to a masonry facade with a flat roof to better blend with the surroundings.

Work moving forward on downtown apartments, condos

The updated design sounds great! I'm glad they choose to go with a more urban look. I can't wait until this thing takes shape, it'll be interesting to see what kinds of businesses will open on the bottom floor of that building. I can't really see a restaurant in that part of town just yet, but maybe someday when more people are living in that area due to to influx in new downtown living options.

The Charleston Gazette | City catalyst: EDGE project moving forward

This is the proposed apartment building on Capitol street. It looks like it is moving forward! This rendering is most likely not the final design, but something similar would look awesome right on that corner.

Where's that building going to be? Parking lot behind the Daniel Boone? The old Jarrett Printing location?

So I stumbled upon this thread about new apartments in Charleston and was wondering what the general health of the city is these days. Is the city gaining some momentum towards revitalization? Or are neighborhoods declining?

I have family roots in WV and have passed through Charleston many times, but it has been a while. I always thought Charleston had really good bones and a great setting. I particularly like the historic architecture downtown and the housing stock heading south from there along the river. I think the area from downtown towards the statehouse could be a great urban district, with a revitalized Washington Street acting as its commercial spine. I could see a revitalized Charleston being somewhat like Ashville (NC), attracting those who want to live in smaller, urban city and capitalizing on the area's unique Appalachian culture and outdoor recreation.

In the parking lot beside the parking garage. Opposite side of the street from Daniel Boone, one block towards the Capitol Market. A very prime location IMO

That is happening to an extent. The East End (between downtown and the capital) has becoming a cultural and hip part of town. A lot of progress is being made downtown with the recent announcements of more urban apartments and condos. I believe 5 mixed use projects have been announced for downtown. The city still has a long ways to go before it becomes "hip", but it is starting to catch up with the rest of the country in modernization and trends.

There is certainly a lot of potential give the city's charm, setting, and proximity to recreation. The population hasn't rebounded yet, but I can imagine with the gas industry in other parts of the state picking up, Charleston will again become relevant in the energy industry. Downtown also has become a regional go to spot for dining and entertainment. New restaurants are always popping up, and retail is still growing here.
