They are remodeling. I noticed crews working on it Wednesday.

That’s good then that they are staying open. Not a BK fan but it keeps some people employed. I guess they forgot to put “For Remodeling” under the “Closed”. Lol.

Also hearing a major tenant in the area of the former KC Mall has not renewed their lease but this while concerning may be premature so not sounding an alarm quite yet on that.

There seems to be a lot of government offices downtown including the FBI. Wouldn't most of those jobs pay fairly well?

There certainly are good paying jobs downtown, but not to the extent of years past. There used to be a large concentration of energy based company's and support businesses that had offices downtown. Gas companies, coal companies, engineering firms, etc... there still is, but not to the degree there used to be. As for government jobs, for the most part they are well paying and a stable employment factor in the city. Specially state jobs.

One other thing we noticed. I was surprised how southern this town is. Strong accents. This is in no way a cut. We were just in Richmond Va, and here very little southern accents. Maybe lots of transplants there?

West Virginia has always had a strong and unique take on the southern accent. Mostly due to isolation for so many years from the rest of the country due to our impassable mountain ranges. The further north you go in the state the less you hear the accent, and vise-versa towards the south.

Huge influx from Nova down to Tidewater. Richmond is in the middle of that. It’s a double edged sword. Lots of good folks but plenty that hated the place they came from and fled it only to turn VA into the same mess that they hated.

Somewhere around Sutton is the dividing line between the north and the south in West Virginia. We have discussed the diverse cultures many times on this board and we each see it a bit differently. But, as you say, Charleston has a VERY southern feel to it. It could be anywhere in the Carolinas and not sound or feel out of place.

Excellent observation! However, ALL of these people live outside the city of Charleston. A smattering live in South Hills but not enough to make a dent and of course the Elk River Valley has a respectable share but mostly these people all live west of Charleston from South Charleston to Hurricane.

This is why the city has a payroll tax and user fee, because these paychecks do not support property taxes, which is the tradition source of income for a city's tax base.

Also there is the notion that people who live outside of a city but work in it are protected for the time that they are at work...a substantial portion of their lives...by the city's police, fire, and EMS, as well as using other resources such as streets, bridges, cetc, and should contribute something toward the cost of those services, especially if there are substantial numbers of such people. If you have a heart attack, are robbed, or are trapped in a fire while at work in a city you work in but don't live in you still expect the same level of service from the city as a taxpaying resident.
Of course, workers from out of town do not get to vote on users fees and are not, unlike the case with a city income tax, at least somewhat protected by the fact that rates are kept in check by the fact that those who do live in the city and who can vote have to impose the same tax rate on themselves that they do on out of towners.
