Hi! We just moved to St Albans and are settling in nicely. Too many boxes and not enough time!
Most of my life I have shopped at Mexican and Asian markets for my produce. We like fruits and veggies that we just don't find at Krogers. They tend to be really cheap, too. I haven't noticed any ethnic markets in the area. Do any of y'all know where I can find a few?
I grew up in Charleston and people's idea of ethnic food usually involves a Chinese buffet so the selection tends to be limited at best. There is an international grocery store in the Kanawha City section of Charleston that has a semi decent collection of mainly middle eastern groceries. I believe it is called "International Grocery Store" or Market or something along those lines. I would be shocked if some residents in St. Albans (or other parts of the Kanawha Valley) knew what the word ethnic meant, let alone where to buy the stuff.
As for asian supermarkets...you are indeed correct about their awesome selection of fresh produce. They are practically on every corner up here in the DC area, I frequent several big box Korean chain grocery stores near my house..their beer selection is quite good as well.

The farmer's market in Charleston is best for fresh vegetables . . you won't find exotics, but if you're buying tomatos, etc., it's the place for taste for fresh vegetables. Indoors, they have 2 butchers, wines, and West Virginia books too. I go there for cheese. Whatever cheese the major grocers are selling is low-grade, so if you cook, I haven't seen an acceptable parmesan in Charleston besides here. But I am new, still finding my way.
Which Kroger are you shopping at? The one in Ashton Place on Corridor G carries higher end and more unusual items than other Krogers in the area. The one in RiverWalk plaza is pretty good also.
There was a place in Kanawha City but not sure if it is still there. Going from 35th Street bridge exit turn Left onto McCorkle heading toward the Kanawha City Mall. The grocery store is/was on the left but I don't remember how many blocks down. I think it sat on a corner of a block but not sure about that either. (It may be the International Groceries that r60 mentioned).
Don't know if these will help you any:
I hear a lot of people talk about Ichiban Restaurant (103 Capitol Street, I think). Article at wvgazettemail.com/Food&Dining/…200805060412
The people at Ichiban may be able to answer your grocery question.
I've heard a lot of good things about Fresh Seafood (fish market and restaurant). I think it's actually in Jefferson City although address says St. Albans.

May I ask where you moved from?
As a kid (1960's) I spent parts of several summers in Charleston across from the Kanawha River (literally) near the Elk River.
Here in Arizona we have lots of Mexican, Asian, etc. grocery stores so it would be a culture shock in even Charleston I bet
Thanks, y'all! We moved from Richmond, VA and I wish we had moved years ago!
I'm home visiting my family this weekend. I'll stop and get a good variety of peppers and grow my own next year. I'll also check out the swankier Krogers.

Do we live in the most beautiful state or what?
Wash DC native here; born/raised so I do understand the market for ethnic eateries
The 'Kroger' stores we have here are named 'Frys'.......it is a family name------nothing to do with our extreme summers here in Arizona
