My son and his family are moving from SC to NC so he can attend seminary.

He is not concerned about out of state tuition because of scholarships and assistance.

He has 2 vehicles and a wife and child.

Is he required to change residency?

If not, is it in his best interest to change to NC.

Thanks

Nahhhh. Tell him to do what thousands of others do. Continue to drive their SC licensed cars on our roads, but not have to pay our pesky taxes. I mean, why should anyone not be allowed to live in NC , enjoy its ammenities, and be required to pay for it? Sheesh!

You think that Charlotte is part of the South?

Politeness and decorum dissolve behind the anonymity of a keyboard.

You don't say if he's moving to the Charlotte area or just "somewhere" in NC. Normally, students do not have to change residency, but that's on the assumption that they are still financially tied to their parents. Since your son is married & has a child of his own, it would be a safe assumption that he is no longer tied to you. Checking with motor vehicles would be the most appropiate answer that I can give you. This is one of those situations that is not black & white.

I can help!!!!

The answer is (usually 30 days) or when gainful employment is accepted

IN NC, from NC DMV

NCDOT Division of Motor Vehicles: How do I title & register a vehicle?

How do I title & register a vehicle?

In the case of new residents, you must register your motor vehicle at the expiration of the time granted by reciprocity agreement between North Carolina and your prior state of residence (usually 30 days) or when gainful employment is accepted, whichever occurs first.
As a new resident of North Carolina, you will not be able to register your vehicle here until you apply for and receive your new North Carolina driver license or North Carolina ID card. North Carolina now issues driver licenses from a central location and mails them to applicants. After you apply for a driver license, you will receive a 20-day Temporary Driving Certificate to be used for driving purposes only until you receive your driver license. Your new license will be mailed within five to 10 days. You will be able to use your new license to register your vehicle in North Carolina.
Most Vehicle & License Plate Renewal Offices are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For a complete listing of offices visit the Office Locations Section.

From SC DMV Website SC Department of Motor Vehicles
Moving?
Welcome to South Carolina If you come into South Carolina from another state and establish a permanent residence, you must apply for a South Carolina driver license. If you own any vehicles they must also be registered in our state.
If you have a valid driver’s license issued by the state from which you moved, you can use it for 90 days, after which time you must surrender it and obtain a South Carolina driver license. You have 45 days to transfer your out of state vehicle registration to South Carolina.
Click here for Form 447 Application for S.C. Credential. See Accepted Forms of Identification for documents needed to obtain the license.
