Hi,
I am a desi living in Germany. I will be moving to Salisbury to live there for about 6 months from next week on an assignment. When I googled, I could not get much information on Salisbury. I got a feeling that it may be a very small town. Most of the google results were showing information about Charlotte which is the nearest big city. I would like to ask for following advice.
1) What is the best place to stay considering that I will be working in Salisbury?
2) How easy it is to get fully furnished rental apartment (for a family of two) for 4-6 months? Worst case, I am ok for a studio.
Please consider that I lcurrently live in a big city and hence I may prefer some thing closer to Charlotte unless its not practicle to travel every day to Salisbury. It will be great if I could get advice about areas where I can get desi stores and restaurents.
It depends a lot on how used to commuting you are, or whether it's worth it to you. I think most people here would say it's too long of a commute, but I came from a bigger city and was used to a long drive-- in retrospect I may have preferred living in Salisbury and wouldn't have minded the drive into Charlotte for work (I know this is the opposite of what you're talking about doing), but it seems the 40-60 minute commute is considered long for people that live here. For ME, living near I85 in Charlotte and commuting to Salisbury wouldn't be that bad.
Salisbury is pretty small. From what I've seen it's got a small-ish town area (a few decent looking restaurants, a few shops) surrounded by mostly residential. Just a hunch, but I'd predict it would be much easier to find furnished apartments near Charlotte. Concord, especially near I85 may be a good compromise so that you can drive pretty easily to both Salisbury and the city, although it definitely has a suburban feel that you may not be looking for.
Thanks a lot guys. So I need to look for apartment near 185 in Charlotte. I will be working some where near Executive drive, Salisbury.
Any other neighborhood which is a good compromise for Salisbury and Charlotte? I mean any town which is worth consider living between Charlotte and Salisbury?
really the only cities between Salisbury and Charlotte on the 85 corridor are Kannapolis and Concord and Kannapolis doesn't offer much as far as rentals unless you're talking a house rental.
I think your best bet would be in Concord.
here's a link for you to check out, it's loaded with information about Concord such as average rent for an apartment, crime statistics, demographics, etc...
I worked in Salisbury for awhile and commuted. It took me around 45 minutes ( I lived on the Northeast side of town not far from 85). I later moved to Concord - it's about 20-30 minutes to Salisbury and 20 minutes to Charlotte. It was easier to find apartments in Concord than in Salisbury - so that might be an option.
Salisbury is a college town and there are plenty of rentals. Both my kids rented by the VA area during the school year. I believe that there are two asian style food store in salisbury.
I just recently got a position at the Medical Center in Salisbury. I am currently commuting from Huntersville. However, we hope to move to Concord soon (which will make a better commute). I am not very familiar with Salisbury, but because of the economy I was not going to be choosy about jobs. I will say that I never would consider living there. I have been following my Garmin direction the past week that I started week. I noticed that I was driving through some questionable areas and figured I should do some research about the safety and different routes.
My research for what is worth, shows Salisbury to be a very high crime area. In fact, what I have found says that only 1 in 10 cities is more dangerous than it is. It does have gang activity. I find that surprising since it only seems to have a population of around 25,000. Violent crime seems to be particularly high.
I am a recent transplant and have only driven to the hospital 6 times. However, I get a feeling of being unsafe at times and the internet research seems to agree with me. Maybe somebody else can chirp in that knows more.
I agree with the advice of renting in Concord. It would be a very reasonable commute.
Thanks a lot guys...I think Concord sounds like good option based on what you guys are recommending.
