A friend is having a birthday party uptown, and I am trying to find some cheap hotel rates. We are going out at epicentre, but we don't want to pay the rates for some of the hotels around there.

We would be ok walking multiple blocks to get back to the hotel for a cheaper rate. It doesn't have to be the nicest place, we just want somewhere to crash. Let me know what you guys think?

Days Inn at 9th and N. Tryon. There's also a $39 a night place at S. Tryon and Bland Streets. Relatively shady places. But those are your best rates. if you stay at Days Inn, I would not go any further north on Tryon.

This is if you are looking for dirt cheap. You could probably find a room at the Holiday Inn on 6th for about $120-150.

I used Priceline about a month ago and got into the Hilton for about 40% of what the rates were on Expedia and other sites.

I am an expert in this area. Hotwire is the best option. I have usually ended up at the Blake Hotel for a great rate using them. The Days Inn is not bad, but as someone said, don't venture north of the hotel by yourself. Before moving here, I also got great deals at the Omni and the Holiday Inn. Don't rule out Orbitz or other search engines. I used to use Opado which is a European engine.

There are a lot of benches downtown that you could sleep on for free.
