Hello All,

My wife has an offer from a company in Charlotte and we have been looking at the Huntersville/Cornelius area for homes. Our major concern at this point is daycare. We live in PA and have access to a number of daycare choices. Does Huntersville/Cornelius area have good daycare choices? Are there waiting lists or do most center have open spots? Our daughter is 2 and we spend $1100+ a month. I am hoping that it is less in NC but not sure. Thanks in advance for any advice you can share!

Daycare used to be in short supply, but it may be a bit better now. There are several big daycares - Kids R Kids, Pal A Roos, Gateway, Primrose, all come to mind - and then some smaller school type facilities that offer full day care - Phoenix Montessori and Christian Montessori come to mind. Churches have daycares too, but I'm not sure about those.

I would recommend you start calling around immediately about availability - I am sure the two Montessori schools are currently enrolling, but I don't know about the others.

We live in Huntersville and have a toddler son. I put significant work into finding a daycare that I would be comfortable to leave my son.

I initially used the NC Child Care website to find the ratings of the various daycares in the area. Meeting minimal standards earns a 1 with 5 making top marks. I decided to focus on only the 4 and 5 stars. We live off Sam Furr Road and commute north for work, so we focused on the northern part of Huntersville along with Cornelius.

We ended up choosing Primrose School in Cornelius. It is a newer, very clean building. The class room size was significantly larger than the other centers I looked at. There are two lead teachers for his room with occasional help from "aides." They provide an AM and PM snack along with a full lunch. They just switched to organic milk so our rate just increased to $252/week. This is for age 1-2. We are happy with the care, however, writing the check every week is painful. But most higher quality centers in the area will run around $200-250 a week.

Our largest dilemma is that we do not actually need full-time care. But most to all centers will only do part-time either Tues & Thurs, or M, W, F options. As a nurse with a rotating schedule, I am "forced" into full time.

The other center that I considered is Kids R Kids in Huntersville. It is also 5 star. However, they did not have an opening at the time.

I am pretty sure that www.childcareresourcesinc.org will enable you a 30 day access to search online. It gives you opening and closing times, rates, stars awarded, and contact information all in one place. I highly recommend it!

Good luck with your search. Thankfully, there are plenty of options.
