I just signed a contract for house in university area and getting it inspected. One of the option is inspection for Radon gas. Is radon a problem in this Charlotte? Do you advice me to get this inspected?

Radon can seep in from soil anywhere around or under a home, regardless of whether your home has a basement, a crawl space, or is built slab-on-grade. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Surgeon General recommend radon testing for all types of homes at or below the third floor.
For the price you pay for the test ($100-$150), it is well worth it. We had a buyer test in our old home that was built on a slab. We thought he was crazy to test. Turns out we had to install a system. Its always better to test now and have the seller install a system if need be, rather than find out down the road when you try to sell the same house and have to put the system in yourself.

The Charlotte area is "not" in what is considered a high risk area for radon. If your house is new, I wouldn't worry too much. If really concerned, I would buy a radon detector device. But, if money is not an object, why not go ahead and have peace of mind and get it inspected. P.S. I would have a second opinion. I have run across some fly-by-night and/or precarious entreprenueurs in the area. I would be more concerned with mold and mildew.
There can be a great deal of variation in an area. I had 2 inspections done that said I had a high enough level to put in an abatement system. Yet 2 of my neighbors, one across the street and 1 two doors down, don't have any problems. The rest of the neighbors haven't tested. In some areas, if you buy with FHA, they will require a radon test.
Definitely get the house checked for radon. Not only is radon a danger to your family but it will kill the value of a house.
