I have not picked up a passenger from an international flight at CLT yet, so this does not apply to you, but when we pick people up at the airport we often find out which gate they will arrive at, and we wait at the security area for that gate. Passengers exit right next to the security area and we meet them at the top of the escalator. If they have checked baggage, then we ride down the escalator with them. If no checked baggage, we all exit from there and head for the car. Our goal - often achieved - is to exit with free parking, which I believe means 30 minutes.

I was allowed to accompany my in laws up to the gate. I had to get a 'buddy pass.' If you ask the agent at the counter, they may be able to assist.
But this was for a domestic flight.

If you paid the "unaccompanied" fee, you should be able to go straight to their gate to pick them up. I paid the fee for my kids to travel unaccompanied and when I picked them up, I had to sign in at the check in counter and they gave me a ticket to go thru security. I had to pick them up right at the gate they came out of.
