Matthews Police Department
CITIZEN ALERT
Door to Door Solicitation
The Matthews Police Department has recently received several complaints about door to door solicitors. In these cases there are two white females in their late to mid 20’s that are going to homes stating that they are selling magazine subscriptions. One of the stories they tell is that the proceeds will somehow support troops fighting in Iraq. They have also made statements about being affiliated UNC-Charlotte. Preliminary investigation has shown that the statements are not true and this is likely a scam to obtain money without providing anything in return. If you have anyone approach your residence that fits this description please contact the police department at 704-847-5555 so an officer can respond and investigate.
Please be aware that the Town of Matthews has an ordinance regulating door to door sales. Anyone conducting business within the Town must obtain a permit from Town Hall. Background checks are done on anyone who is considered for a permit, and the legitimacy of their business is verified. The permit must be carried by the solicitor along with approved photo identification and provided upon request. If you believe there is anyone operating in violation of this ordinance, please contact the police department. For more information about this law, go to
