I understand that there is no discharge of firearms in Charlotte, NC, but what about the rest of Mecklenburg county, and the surrounding areas? I want to go .22 squirrel hunting within an hour of Charlotte, but can't figure out where it's legal, and where would be a good place.

Any help from the experienced would be appreciated!

You can't hunt anywhere in the county. Your best bet is 1.5 hrs east of here in the wilderness near Albemarle. You can hunt year round , I believe. For more precise info , visit www.ncwildlife.org. Good luck.

I have done it from my deck in south Charlotte.
Just use a BB/pellet gun w/ scope and not .22

Well, as a rule I like to be legal, and I like to do it as a form of leisure as well as for the game capture, so walking in the woods is half the fun! Etacarinae, I think they just put a season on Squirrels state wide this year for the first time, but I will look into the Albemarle area, and thanks for the suggestion.

This is not true. You can hunt in Mecklenburg County. To see restrictions, look here: https://www.ncwildlife.org/Regs/flipbook/index.html Once the link opens, look at the Table of Contents and find Local Laws. I think Mecklenburg County laws are on page 72 or so.

I think you're right Bugguy!

Mecklenburg
● Hunt deer with any rifle, except that a muzzleloading rifle may
be used during the primitive-weapons season.
● Hunt with a firearm from a public road or highway right-of-way.

that is the law for the county, now that means you can hunt a squirrel with a .22. However I'm 99% sure i read not within the charlotte city limits. Still, if I get a farmer's permission in, say concord, 5 mins from concord mills, is this legal?

Yes, there is lots of good hunting in Mecklenburg County. Just no discharging firearms in the cities.

I would also suggest the Uwharrie national forest. There is thousands of acres there. You can hunt in the Birkhead Mountain Wilderness too - part of the UNF. Just make sure you get game lands access on your hunting license. You can walk the woods off the forestry roads for hours looking for game.
