I am driving my son to school at UNCC
every few weeks and if I can find a
safe campground or decent & safe hotel room for $30-$40
then I would like to stay over night and shop/explore
the area.

Any locals with advice????

Kelly, any hotel room less than $55. will be in really bad areas I'm afraid - personally I'd have to spend at least $75 to feel safe.

The Charlotte metro area has a few KOA campgrounds you could check out. They are usually RV campgrounds, but some of them have tent sites. Several county parks have campgrounds but I'm not so sure that would be very safe for a woman traveling alone. But call McDowell Nature Preserve, I THINK they actually have a campground host who sleeps in the campground and locks the gate at a certain time for safety. In addition, it's located in a fairly safe area of the city.

Have a great trip!

I love KOA. I always stay in a "kampin kabin". Basically, its got a bed and electricity, but you bring everything, inc. the sheets and pillows. They are usually under $40 a night.

I stayed at the Wingate off I-85, near the airport, for $45 plus tax a night. It is a GREAT place to stay. Hotels and Motels down here are very inexpensive compared to the north. You can get a Marriot branded hotel for $70 or so a night. I stayed on the executive floor of the Hilton off University Blvd for $140, where that would be a few hundred dollars or even in the thousands up in a northern city.
