Kelly, any hotel room less than $55. will be in really bad areas I'm afraid - personally I'd have to spend at least $75 to feel safe.
The Charlotte metro area has a few KOA campgrounds you could check out. They are usually RV campgrounds, but some of them have tent sites. Several county parks have campgrounds but I'm not so sure that would be very safe for a woman traveling alone. But call McDowell Nature Preserve, I THINK they actually have a campground host who sleeps in the campground and locks the gate at a certain time for safety. In addition, it's located in a fairly safe area of the city.
