About 80 percent of the new Shaw positions will be engineering jobs, with average pay of about $95,000 per year, the company said. Shaw announced a partnership with Toshiba Corporation this week that makes Shaw the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for most of the company's new nuclear plants.
The 225 new Charlotte employees will be working on plants built by Toshiba, and hiring is set to begin as early as this week, Shaw said.
Looks like there is something wrong with the math.
If you read the article, it states the following:
“…In 2007, when the company employed about 950 workers in Charlotte, officials said Shaw would bring more than 500 jobs to the city over the next five years. The company was eligible for $12.7 million in payroll tax incentives if it met its hiring goal.
Now, Shaw employs about 1,100 Charlotte workers. The 225 new hires announced Tuesday would push Shaw closer to the hiring goal set in 2007. It was unclear Tuesday if there were any additional incentives involved in landing the jobs….”
They way I read it, on 11/28/07, the company made a commitment to bring 556 jobs to Charlotte over a 5 year period. To date, they have added 150 jobs, which leaves them with 406 more to fill.
The 225 positions they announced yesterday are not in addition to their original commitment. The title of the article is flawed…at first read, it seems to say that more jobs are coming. The headline should have read “Shaw still behind on their 2007 job creation commitment after making deal With Toshiba”.
Also, given that they are partnering with Toshiba, I’m wondering if that will impact Toshiba’s April 2009 commitment to create 194 positions.
I’m OK with posting these “feel good” chamber of commerce stories, but would expect that journalists take an interest after the fact. They should investigate and report the true facts…what was promised, what was delivered, and most importantly, if there were public financial considerations attached to their promise, what was repaid back to us.
The article in the Charlotte Business Journal is a bit more truthful about the fact that 89quattro just pointed out:
"The company ended up growing a little slower in uptown than had been anticipated. But the hires announced Tuesday bring the total here to 1,325, essentially hitting the mark Shaw had set three years ago."
Where are they going to find 225 additional people with nuke experience. They must be searching nursing homes far and wide....did anyone mention the time frame?
In addition to the jobs that Shaw will be creating, Toshiba has announced that it will add another 25-40 employees to support the nuclear development contract.

The military (ex submariners) is a great resource for finding this type of employee.
