Hi All My family and I (husband, two young sons) are relocating to the Charlotte area. My husband starts a new job at UNCC April 5, and though I haven't found a job yet I assume I'll be working near downtown where most nonprofits tend to be located. (My profession is nonprofit development.)

While looking for apartments/houses to rent, the most significant considerations are schools and commute time. Though we've visited once and will be visiting again a couple times before we move, map and school searches seem to indicate that the Matthews/Mint Hill area would be ideal.

Does anyone have any recommendations or comments about that area? We'd need three bedrooms, and would love a pool. (Coming from Michigan, where you can't throw a rock without hitting a natural water body, we'd miss water a lot in summer. Especially because our adjustment to warmer summer temperatures in going to be difficult!)

Also, I'm an avid gardener and really look forward to seeing what I can grow in such a warmer environment. (My current zone is 4) Are there any community gardens in the area?

Thanks in advance!

Mint Hill is a fave of mine. There are many threads here on city-data about it and the Matthews area, just use the search button

Given the job location I'd say Mint Hill or the section of Matthews abutting it are the right place for you to be searching. (The other side of Matthews south of Independence Blvd will put you in more traffic if you do indeed have to travel uptown).

Homes with pools do exist, but are not the norm. Many neighborhoods offer community pools, so people don't feel the need to have one at home.

Lot of fans of Mint Hill here on CD!! We could not be happier as well... The town has great plans for the future. Annual events bring the town together, the Fall Festival, parade, tree lighting ceremony...
