Does anyone know why the city of Lawndale has purple ribbons hanging from, telephone polls, mailboxes & street signs all the way thru town?

Possibly this

The Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign: The Purple Ribbon Initiative (http://dvam.vawnet.org/campaigns/purple-ribbon.php - broken link)

but Wikipedia says purple ribbon usage is pretty ubiquitous.

<shrug> I would have thought it was in honor of Phylicia Barnes because her favorite color was/is purple.
$25,000 reward in Phylicia Barnes case - CharlotteObserver.com (http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/01/29/2018438/25000-reward-in-phylicia-barnes.html - broken link) but Lawndale isn't close to Monroe.
Hmmm... Purple Ribbons can be used to commemorate all types of things: Purple Ribbon Products, Awareness Products Online
OK, I'll admit; I don't really know.

According to the nice lady at the Lawndale Historical Society, they are in honor a 22 year old cystic fibrosis patient who had a double lung transplant. He is currently back home and doing well.
