I'm assuming the airport exchangers would be more expensive than somewhere else.

Check with your own bank.

For me I have discovered in the UK there are certain airport ATMS I can hit with no fees and great rates.

I just tell the bank before I go they raise my ATM allowance and also know which country's I will be in.

In the country you are traveling to, use a reputable bank or ATM for the bank in the foreign country, make a nominal cash withdrawl.

If you plan to use an ATM in another country, make sure that before you leave the country you call the issuing financial institution (your bank or credit union) and let them know you will be doing this. Otherwise, there could be a fraud hold placed on the card if there are all of a sudden attempts to use it in another country.

Looks like we are assuming the OP is travelling, but I wonder if the OP just wants to do a little currency speculation. What is it, gvsteve?

Certainly you wouldn't do this by holding physical Euros. The exchange costs will kill you and it's not very liquid. (and who knows if the Euro will even last) Probably better to get a forex account for that.

If the idea is to preserve wealth because the $ is going to hell, then gold or silver are much better choices.

As one suggested, check with your own bank. Or have someone who works for a bank do it for you (in which case there are no or very limitted fees...and everyone knows someone who works for BofA or Wells Fargo/Wachovia in this town, right???).

Also, if you have AAA check with them.
