Stay in Surfside or Garden City. Family geared and very close to all the MB tourist stuff. Places to stay are going to vary greatly depending on exactly what your looking for.
We loved the Anderson, ocean front in the heart of Myrtle Beach. Real close to 21st Ave which takes you to Broadway at the Beach. It's a very nice hotel. Bathroom had a large whirlpool tub, also had washer/dryer, full kitchen with dishes. Google it. Further south is Family Kingdom Amusement Park and there are some hotels down that way like Coral Beach, Holiday Inn to name a few.
How old are your children? There are a lot of college and HS spring breakers there at this time. If you stay in the heart of MB they are going to be exposed to a lot.
North MB is better or South of MB {as racewire said} might suit your needs better.

Thanks for the response... 7 and 3 yr old.
Whats the difference between North and South
Check out Dunes Village resort. That's the only place I will be staying when I go down to Myrtle. I have a 3.5 year old and they have two VERY large in-door water parks which will be great for the time frame you are going as it will still be cool potentially, especially the outdoor pools and ocean.
It's still in "Myrtle Beach" but it's very far up and you go past residential and then you get to this hotel. I actually feel safe crossing the street too unlike on down in the heart of Myrtle. Nice rooms too, nothing 5 star quality but you aren't paying 5 star prices either, especially in April.
There is a lot of crime in Myrtle Beach these days. Don't stay at any place between 17th Ave South and maybe 42nd Ave North.
Crime is everywhere, even the Magic Kingdom has it's share, but I have been going to Myrtle Beach for over 40 years and have never encountered anything in MB proper. It's safe to be on guard anywhere these days.
My hotel room was broken into in North Myrtle once and my camera was stolen a couple years back. This was a 5 star resort where you wouldn't expect things like this to happen.
So, here's a tip. Use your hotel room safe, regardless of how long you will be out of the room.
Overall MB is safe. Saying there is "a lot of crime" is probably an exaggeration.
North Myrtle consist of several beach towns such as Crescent Beach, Windy Hill, Ocean Drive and Atlantic Beach (which is mainly a black beach). South of Myrtle would be Surfside Beach, Garden City, Litchfield and a few more. They are all fine areas away from the hustle and traffic jams of MB proper.
If you like seafood, the town of Murrell's Inlet (south of MB) or world famous town of Calabash (actually in NC, but a short drive) are fun to visit. Not saying the seafood is the best, but they are fun to visit, especially for kids. Get there by 5pm or you'll be waiting in line.
