I am new to City Data Charlotte and have been looking for information about living in Gastonia. My husband and I will be relocating for his job in Kings Mountain. I have yet to find employment but hope to be employed in the Charlotte Area. For now we would like to minimize the commute due to rising gas prices so we are looking at Gastonia as a happy medium. But the last post on Gastonia apartments drew some negative comments about safety.

I am from NY and have lived abroad in major cities so I am aware of how to be cautious in metropolitan areas.

I was just wondering if anyone had any input about any fairly safe apt. complexes in or near Gastonia. I am looking specifically at The Bluffs at Northwood, The Landing, the Patriots, Chateau Village, and Georgetowne Woods. Any experience living in these?

We are also thinking of stopping by the police dept to inquire as to which areas receive the most calls.

Thanks!

SB295,Chromekitty, & JP are the people that come to mind who can give you great info on that area.

Also, what part of NY are you from? (upstate NY/The city/Long Island/westchester/etc...?) Any kids?

Your best bet would be to call them to get the information. Best choices for apartment living is going to be in the Belmont area. While the selection is slim you will feel much better about that area overall and the commute to both KM and Charlotte is easy, just jump on 85 or take 74.

Gastonia has the most apartments. I'm not certain which thread you are referring to, but some posters in Charlotte take pot shots at Gastonia. Look at the area bordered on the west by Union & the east by Redbud. That area is perfectly safe, but by all means check with the police.

Kings Mountain has apartments, but it is impossible to check them out online. We had a thread recently & I suggested to that person that he call the Kings Mountain office of the Cleveland County Chamber of Commerce. About Our Community The woman who runs the office is wonderful & a wealth of information.

Thank you, CouponJack for directing me towards the knowledgeable posters. I have seen their names frequently. I am from Upstate NY and no kids. Appreciate your input!

Thanks SB 295 for giving me specific areas to consider. So helpful!! I will give the Chamber of Commerce offices a call. You should get a reference fee for as many times as I have seen you mention them. Many thanks again!

You're welcome. I think that some of the apartments that you listed are in the area. I've also seen nice apartments on Robinwood & Hudson. I know that I've seen them on other roads, too. In your case, since you're already looking, I thought that giving you the area would be good. (Many people post before looking.)

FYI, I live in Kings Mountain & depending on where I'm going to Gastonia, I either take 74 in or switch to I 85. From that area, your husband could take 74 & then switch over to Garrison Road. If you look on a map, you'll see how that works. It's a great way to go that I was taught by a life-long local.

I wish that I could help more with Kings Mountain rentals. Usually, people & apartment complexes just put out for rent signs. I did notice a vacancy sign today. It's at the corner of Mountain & Cansler. The problem with that is that it's a block from the railroad tracks. I'm not certain if it's a problem because it's a large 4 unit building made of heavy stone.

While I am not sure how important it is to you, you may want to ask the local LE about the demographics of the apartment complexes. Many of them are filled with younger "adults" and the complex is party central, along with that comes other issues.

The apartment management can't discuss these types of things that is why I suggest asking the police when you call if these type of things are important to you.

More great info from you!! Thank you!! Love reading your posts on others' questions. I went driving around Kings Mountain yesterday and found a lovely apartment complex, but it ended up being a facility for the elderly. Not quite ready for that yet! But I will drive around some more and especially on the corner of Mountain and Cansler. If you see anything else, please do pass on the info. Very valuable!!! Thank you!! BTW, what do you like about living in Kings Mountain? What don't you like about it? I am open to living there than Gastonia.
