Hey all,

I'm an out of state student with an internship in Charlotte during June and July. I'm extremely late in the housing process as all of the "intern housing" accommodations at the local universities are completely full. I'm wondering if anyone has any information about where to go for affordable housing in the area. Renting an apartment off Craigslist will be hard since I can't get to Charlotte until the week of the internship. For now, I'm looking at the following extended stay hotels:

-Suburban Extended Stay in Concord, NC
-Extended Stay America at University Place
-Extended Stay America Deluxe at Matthews

If anyone knows about the neighborhoods or the quality of these hotels, please let me know. I'm also interested in any suggestions about other housing alternatives.

Thanks,

Junior

Where exactly is the internship located? If you tell us that we can better advise you on your list above

The internship is in North Charlotte, very close to UNCC (to the northwest). Thanks

In that case I would scratch the one in Matthews off your list - it is the furthest one from your location and would mean a longer commute and higher gas prices.

I cannot recommend the Extended Stay University location, as it is not in the safest area.

So that leaves the Concord location, which is not bad but in kind of a congested area.

Have you seen the extended stay place on hwy 29 in Concord? That is a pretty easy commute to the University area and you will be a lot safer there. http://www.corporatesuites.biz/concord.html

OK, thanks. That was kind of the idea I got from the hotel reviews on TripAdvisor. I guess the Suburban Hotels is my number one choice at the moment then. Do you know anything else about the Concord area that might be helpful (access to grocery, commute if I wanted to get to downtown, etc.)?

Is InTown Suites also in a bad area? There is also a StudioPlus on McCullough Drive that I read mixed reviews about.

Does anyone know of any other options that might be feasible for an intern on a budget?

Thanks again for all your help!

I would not recommend the McCullough Dr. area, or anything else south of WT Harris Blvd in the University area. It is rough around the edges and just not an area I'd want my kid to live in.

Concord is a nice place. Even though I said that Suburban was in a congested area you might like it for all the stuff going on in that general area. There is a huge mall - Concord Mills - with many surrounding restaurants, movie theater, ect. The one draw back is how close it is to Charlotte Motor Speedway because a few times a year there will be LOTS of out of town traffic heading to the Nascar races.

What did you think of the one I posted the link for on hwy 29?

Oh, and the commute from that location in the Concord area to uptown Charlotte is about 20 minutes in none rush hour times.

Since you are only going to be here for 2 months perhaps you could find a room to let in someone's home? Have you looked at Craig's List to see what is available?

Somehow I missed that part of your post the first time I read it. Thanks for the link! - I just took a look. The listed price is actually above my price range, but I am going to give them a call shortly to see what the monthly discount would be.

Suburban actually is priced under $35 a night, which is why I was inquiring about the neighborhood and the quality of the hotel. I know it wouldn't be luxurious, but I would love a clean and safe place to come to each night of my stay in Charlotte. The Suburban Hotel brand is non-existent where I'm from, so I was hoping for some insight into them as a hotel.

That whole general area where that Suburban is located in Concord is nice and new. You could feel very safe there too
