If you are flying in to visit I suggest renting a car and getting a navigation system for it. I have one for my car and could not have gotten around nearly as easily if I didn't. I bought it part way through our house hunting here (which spanned several weeks since we lived close enough to come on weekends). My husband recently traveled and rented a car and the nav. system was only $10 extra to get in the car. (the one I bought was only $300, in May and has been worth every penny I spent, and it's portable too).
Of course having a good map is key too, but I have found the Charlotte ones SO BIG that it's hard to look at them in the car! The booklet style my husband got is much better, it even has our subdivision in it, and includes streets that aren't even THERE yet, just planned.

check out the Thornhill subdivision in Ballantyne...

This area has some really nice established homes...I am sure you will like it!
