I was thinking of going to the show near uptown, but several people at work have told me to avoid it. They said a lot of unsavory people go there and there has been known to be shootings.

Can anyone recommend a good show?

Shootings? Plural? Really?

4th of July Festival with free music and fireworks | U.S. National Whitewater Center

I would skip Uptown. Not because I'm really scared, but because last time I was there, I almost peed my pants because I couldn't move through crowd or find a urinal quick enough. Too crowded man.

I'm not sure how far you are from Lake Wylie but they're supposed to be having one at the Buster Boyd Bridge as well, see: Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce > Home. My fav site just updated today with other fireworks displays going on around the Charlotte area this weekend too (i.e. Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Tega Cay, etc), see: Charlotte Events, Concerts & Festivals - Weekend10.com.
