Considering moving back to the South to be closer to family (and because I moved away and discovered that I am indeed romantically intoxicated with the idea of the region) and would like to live in a rather dense, urban neighborhood that offers an older housing stock, vintage apartments. It'd be nice to be able to walk to a grocery store or some local eateries, as well. Any recommendations?

Dilworth, South End or NoDa (North Davidson) would be good spots. They're both right in the shadow of uptown. Nice areas with plenty to do. Good luck.

My coworker is in NoDa right now, and describes it exactly as what you're looking for.

Plaza-Midwood, particularly right around Central and Plaza.

Plaza Midwood is really the best for walkability - a Harris Teeter (soon to be expanded), public library, coffee shops, restaurants and post office. Though I would say that I prefer the restaurants in Noda.

Midwood & Dillworth are horrendously overpriced and falling in value every day. Noda is surrounded by crime so don't move there unless you are an extreme urban pioneer type. There are also a lot of fairly homophobic couples (think Buffy and Biff) that moved into these places during the economic boom.

My recommendation to a Gay person is to find a Gay friendly real estate agent and let them know what you are looking for and the price range. There is a Gay neighborhood, and unfortunately the name escapes me, that is located in the unlikely place of West Derita.

For the most part, in modern day Charlotte, you can move to any neighborhood in CLT and you won't have any issues.

I agree with others Plaza Midwood sounds to fit what your looking for and Fourth Ward.
For gay realtors go to gaycharlotte.com click on Directory tab then click on Realtors.
Keep us posted in what your finding or have any other questions.
