Looking for a decent gym in the Charlotte area, preferably near Matthews/Monroe that does not require ANY type of contract or automated bank draft payments (been there, done that and will NEVER do it again).

I want to simply pay by the month in cash with no commitment or having to sign anything beyond an injury/liability waiver.

The YMCA does not require a contract. My friend belongs to the SteelCreek Y and pays every 90 days for her membership. Give the Y a call to see what they offers. I do know that Planet Fitness has sale right now for $99 for the year, if you sign up by 8/31. Here's the link:

Sports & Fitness.

Something like $17.99/month, no contract. They probably have specials from time to time.

I wouldn't work out at Planet Fitness for free.

I second the Y. They just started this new program that your monthly rate will be based on your earnings (not to exceed the standard rate though). You have to show a W2 form from your employer. Otherwise, the standard rate in $64.99.

Snap Fitness 24/7. Not sure what amenities you are looking for.

I tried Snap Fitness, they wanted auto drafts or pay for an entire year up front if I remember correctly.
All I want is to pay for a month at a time and be free to stop at any time without penalty or the accounting office calling me and demanding payment for a membership I no longer use.
Basic stuff is all I need...treadmills, stair climbers, weights and a conducive non muscle head environment.

I guess the Y might be a good alternative if I can find one that is a good location somewhere near Independence Blvd between Monroe and Charlotte.

Thanks but.... NO THANKS!!

They are pretty much the reason I started this thread...

When I joined Lifestyle, I told them I did not want to do bank draft payments and was assured that I did to have to. I payed my start up with a check and unknown to me they took the account info off the check and started billing my account without my permission.
When I found out and complained about it, they said it was in the fine print that I signed.....

So, yes my fault for not reading the fine print....THEIR fault for the sales rep saying one thing and handing me something else to sign.
They also use an electronic signature machine, similar to what UPS uses when you sign for a package, so you can't actually see what you are signing when you sign it.

It took months to get them to stop taking money from my account but once I did get it straightened out, I ended up having to put my membership with them on hold for health reasons (I have some back problems that can prevent me from working out for weeks at a time when they flare up) and after a month I started getting bills from them in the mail and eventually someone from their corporate office started calling me and acting like a collocation agency....demanding I pay for the months that I had been on hold.

Needless to say I have permanently severed my membership with Lifestyle and I would not recommend them to my worse enemy.

What about Planet Fitness? They have a location in Matthews. I go to the one on 51. $10 a month, no contract. They draft my account every month, but that is no big deal. I have had a few friends move, and they cancel no problems at all. You might be able to pay in cash, not sure. Lots of everything you mentioned you want.

I'd go with the Y as well as my family has had a good experience with them. I was with the predecessor of Sports & Fitness and they were awful (the name escapes me at the moment). It was like pulling teeth to get out of my contract. Customer service was awful on top of that. Probably part of the reason they went under. For my brief exposure to S&F, they were ok.
