I already have fescue, so am used to the browning. Not my first choice, because of the watering, but don't really want to start over.

Well, believe me, my lawn is far worse than yours. I'm dealing with the front first. The back is just such a hideous mess that it will take longer. I just don't have the money to start from scratch, because I'm paying off medical bills, plus I've got 10 years of seed from crab grass, signal grass, & wire grass. I keep killing the back yard but it just keeps coming back. I don't want to scrape off the top layer of soil because it's top soil that has been pounded into the clay & therefore blended. I've managed to kill off most of the weeds & the grassy weeds aren't as thick, so it's just a matter of patience.

I have tried to control our crabgrass with the Bayer weed killer for lawns and have not managed depsite 3 applications, so am going to spray with general weed/grass killer for paths (which I know does work) and then aerate and overseed the whole lot. I will have bare patches, but to be honest would have probably had those anyway if the lawn weedkiller had worked.
Also plan on using a mix of fescue and rye again, but will probably cater the mix to our lawn as we have some areas that get blasted by sun all day, and some that are almost totally shaded.
I plan to dig out a flower bed in part of the sunniest lawned area where we have the most problems with lack of lawn and crabgrass.
I'm short of full sun areas for planting and now that I have a good idea of what plants are easy to look after (ie love the sun and don;t need lots of water) I find planted areas less frustrating and time consuming than lawn.

To the OP - sure you meant to add it, but don't forget the starter fertiliser when you overseed.

Pennington One Step has that included in the mix.
