Niece of mine recently moved here and is starting work as an attorney in one of the Uptown law firms. She already has suits for client meetings and such, but day-to-day the firm is business casual. She asked me to give her advice on whether there are any good boutiques or other locally-owned stores in the area where she could get some business casual clothes (nice tops, slacks, etc.). Obviously department stores may carry some stuff (although honestly those tend to favor trendy things that pass with the season), whereas she is looking for things with conservative cuts that look nice and will withstand the test of time. She also likes supporting local businesses whenever possible.

As a dude, I'm at a complete loss. Any recs. are much appreciated.

Tell your neice to try the Kasper outlet at Concord Mills. They have a great selection of women's business wear with traditional pieces that could easily be updated with new accessories, etc.

Ann Taylor is the perfect solution. She could not go wrong with their selections. I work in the legal industry and do almost all of my shopping at Ann Taylor, from business casual to suits. I don't have to figure it out, all of their clothing are made for the working women. Depending on her style, Talbots carries nice clothing. There is a Talbots outlet in the university area, really great deals.

Not surprised, QueenBee, that you and I shop at the same stores, lol.

I ditto Ann Taylor and Talbots and would add Jones New York (signature and platinum collections) available at Dillards and Belk. I especially recommend Foxcroft blouses available at Nordstrom - they are a mainstay of my wardrobe, both dress and business casual. They don't wrinkle and last forever.

Watch for sales and stretch those dollars! Good luck and happy shopping!

I don't know if they still exist , but there is a set of 1970's era buildings at 3rd and Independence that has a store with some b.casual women's apparel. I can't recall the name. I think it was Junior League Warehouse , IDK. Also , try Talbots , as Ani stated , and possibly Talheimers(sp?). Good luck!!
