I have family coming in for a visit. One thing we have planned, is a trip to Scarowinds. My nephew is a bit scared of roller coasters, but says he may try one or two. Any recommendations on which two he should try? I guess The Intimidator would not be one.
Ride the Goldrusher. Carowinds first roller coaster, opened in 1973. I still ride it myself (for old time sake) when I visit. He may also enjoy Woodstock Express. This is a junior sized wooden coaster that opened in 1975. Another fun ride that's not too fast or scary is the Flying Ace Aerial Chase. These are all good starter coaster. If he's a really small kid, under 10, the smallest coaster is Lucy's Crabbie Cabbie. The only way adults can ride is if they have a kid with them.
If he's 14 - he might enjoy the Intimidator...It's a really fun ride and there are no upside down loops. My daughter was scared of roller coasters and she got on the Intimidator and that was the end of fear of roller coasters..she is now a roller coaster junkie!

I would agree with this 100%, those are great places to start.
After that is the Hurler, there is only 1 big hill. My scaredy cat 8 year old loves it now. Thunder Road seems a little bigger than the Hurler, I was a bit scared when I rode it. And someone puked in one of the cars when I was there last weekend
He might also like the Carolina Cyclone since it has shoulder harnesses to keep you in your seat. The Carolina Cobra is the same way, but a little scary since it goes backward.
I have yet to ride the Intimidator, or any ride above 54 inches. My kids aren't that tall yet, so I'm in no hurry.
We are avoiding the Southern Star, the pirate ship that does a complete 360.
I don't know if you are aware, but if you buy your 2012 season pass at the box office, you get one free day this year on the day of purchase. It is not available on line.
I do not recommend Hurler for anyone. I like wooden coasters but that one makes me feel like I been in car wreck and need a Chiropractor. I guess mabe people are more tough.

Agree on that. I love wooden coasters that are properly maintained and Hurler is not one of them. It was great when in opened in 1994, but it's too rough for my personal liking now.
BTW, Thunder Road is being totally rebuilt from the concrete footers up. The park is doing a 4 year rebuild on this coaster doing a small section at a time during the off-season. In 2012 it should be complete and ride like a brand new coaster.
