Hi all. I've been posting all over the place regarding a move to Charlotte with a child with autism -- 11 year old daughter. I was wondering if anyone could put me in touch with an education advocate in the Union Co. school district. If you know of one, can you please pm me and let me know how I can get in touch with him or her. Thanks so much.

Please contact Melinda Plue at The Arc of Union County. Her office will be able to assist you.

Good luck!

Also considering joining unioncountymommies and join the Children with Special Needs section. Great place for advice and tons of personal experiences. Many moms have children on the autism spectrum.

I must warn you, that while some schools do a better job than others at managing our children's educations, there have been STEEP budget cuts across the Carolinas that have impacted everyone across the board. It's difficult to find a happy medium but not imposssible.

I used Melinda once, she didn't say a word at the meeting, but the school gave me what I was looking for at the time--I don't think that would have happened if she hadn't been there. I might be contacting her again soon myself. Definitely worth it.

Here's the link to the Charlotte chapter of The Autism Society of N.C. - I believe their staff also serves those in nearby counties including union.

Default Parent Advocate through the Autism Society of NC

You can contact the Autism Society of NC's parent advocates, Kim Tizzard and Nancy Popkin. They work with parents in all the school districts surrounding Charlotte. Their contact information is: 704-984-9678. You can also e-mail them at: npopkin@autismsociety-nc.org.

Once you are settled in Union County, they have an active group of parents that you may want to contact to learn more about the communities there. The chapter's contact info is: unioncountyautismsociety@yahoo.com. Their co-leaders are Kim Belk and Karen Baker.

I hope this is helpful to you. Nancy Nestor, ASNC Regional Chapter Support and Development Coordinator
