Okay so I have to drive around a lot and like to listen to sports radio when I'm in the car. Is it just me or do the sports radio stations here (the only ones I know of are 610 and 730 AM) not always come in very strongly? A lot of times it seems like I can only hear them clearly within the city limits, and they don't even come in very well in places still in Mecklenburg County like Huntersville or Cornelius. Outside of Mecklenburg County, forget about it, although I think 730 may have something to do with Gastonia so I think it does come in a little better when going west from Charlotte.
Has Charlotte ever tried to get an FM sports radio station? (and no I don't care if they don't talk about Philly sports I just like to listen to sports in general)
I believe CBS stations 97.9 and perhaps 101.9 still simulcast WFNZ on their FM HD Radio subchannels, which come in good in most parts of the Charlotte metro area if you have an HD Radio in your car. I can get them on my Sony HD Radio receiver that I have set up in my house. Much better than AM static. Check out JVC or Sony HD car radios at Best Buy or Walmart. More selection at Crutchfield.com ... But, I agree, I would like to see Charlotte add full power FM news/talk and sports stations, rather than the mediocre, typical and predictable music format stations they currently have.
I agree Phils, I live in the Steele Creek area which is within the city limits and neither 610 nor 730 come in as clear as I would expect. We could definitely use an FM sports station. I've gone almost exclusively to XM now which means ESPN and no local sports.
I am a loyal Sirius subscriber, but also like to listen to WFNZ for Panthers coverage and local talk and you're right it does not come in for me. I've tried to find something on FM for local sports, but couldn't.
10+ year bump! Noticed 610 WFNZ is now also on 92.7 FM and seems to come in stronger.
I had thought of this thread because I was driving in Mooresville during the NFL playoffs and I think the Bengals first round game was on the radio but it was barely coming in. I think I was able to get a station from Cincinnati to come in better than the Charlotte ones.
