For those that are newcomers to Charlotte, really take a look a the CMS magnet schools. They really offer some excellent programs in Charlotte. We have our daughter in the IB program and couldn't be happier so far.

Is it true if you have one child that gets into a magnet the other one will automatically be able to go to the same school? I assume that also applies if you have twins so you can essentially double your odds? (father of new twins here)

Yes Frank, it's true. I've only thought about it in older/younger siblings terms though... It seems they woudl honor it for twins too though. Don't be afraid to call the magnet school office.

My child attends the language school and it is INCREDIBLE. We toured many of the magnets and the choices at CMS are second to NONE in this state and many others. We feel like we are in a private school.

Explore your options!

Dec 2 was the enrollment deadline to be eligible for this upcoming lottery, which ends on Monday Feb 13. Here is information from an email I received:

information about the Monday, Feb. 13, student-assignment lottery (magnet lottery) deadline. The first student-assignment lottery application period will end on Monday, Feb. 13 at 10 p.m. The student-assignment lottery is an online process, open daily from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. CMS will provide free computer access at the Family Application Center (700 Marsh Rd.) and at all zone offices. Computers at these locations will be available from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lottery assignment notifications letters will be sent to families in late February. The letters give assignments through the lottery process and provide information on how to ask for reassignment. Students new to CMS in the 2012-2013 school year must have enrolled in the system by Dec. 2 to be eligible for the first lottery. Students who enrolled after Dec. 2 will be eligible for the second lottery, which runs from March 14 to June 4. Read Six things families need to know about the student-assignment lottery: Six things families need to know about the student-assignment lottery For more information on the CMS student-assignment lottery, call 980-343-5030, email magnets@cms.k12.nc.us or visit the magnet webpage (Home).
