Best Venues - Tremont Music Hall, Amos's Southend, The Visualite Theater and The Milestone (which is legandary).

Can't speak to your question about what different age groups like in particular, sorry.

Pick up Creative Loafing...

The best bands and venues are individual choices. There's no ONE kind of music for an age group. That's true of any city in any country.

For a good look at local bands, go to myspace.com/clcharlottemusic - there's a few hundred of them there.

Tremont is good for metal shows
Visulite is good for a variety
Neighborhood Theatre gets a lot of jam bands
Evening Muse is a great acoustic venue
Amos' gets a lot of nationals and cover bands
Puckett's is great for Americana, bluegrass and country
The Milestone is great for punk and indie
Double Door is great for blues

I can go on....

oh goodie! An old thread. My experience with live music locally has been limited, but we love going to the Evening Muse because it is so tiny and intimate. If you want to sit 3 feet away from the performer you can. Visulite theatre, just up the street is a fun but larger venue.

Since this thread was started in 07 there is a new outdoor venue, Road runner mobile amphitheatre (in spite of the name, I think it's a permanent installation and they don't move it around )
Very fun outdoor theatre, but you have to be careful because none of the seats are covered and they put on concerts rain or shine! And no umbrellas allowed. So, if you go and it rains, you wear a raincoat and/or get wet. Doesn't sound like fun. Also, a stinking hot summer night might be a little uncomfortable also. We went once; weather was great and the concert was terrific.

Go to clclt.com/music - you can download a copy of Jeff Hahne's Homebrew - all four volumes.
You'll get one song each of about 60 local bands... that should let you know plenty about the local music scene's sound.
