I posted in the Raleigh forum quite a while back and have been researching the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and Cary areas, but I just don't think they're urban enough for me. Then I was reading/checking out Charlotte online and it looks pretty good. It looks very, very diverse, just as most areas of NC are I suppose.
Here's a bit about me.
When are you moving? The end of this upcoming June.
Where are you coming from? Raised in New Haven, CT & Brooklyn, NY - Went to HS in Albany NY. I'm an urban lover.
Why are you moving? Looking for better weather, nicer people, and cheaper cost of living.
Where will you be working? I'm an internet marketer; I work from home.
Where will your work location be? In my apartment!
Maximum commute time desired? N/A
What city are you moving to? Charlotte hopefully if it's a good fit for me!
Have you been here yet? Nope, but I plan on driving down in April sometime to check out places. Any suggestions of where to check out would be greatly appreciated!
Will you buy or rent? Rent.
If renting, are you looking for an apartment, a townhouse or loft? How much can you spend? Apartment - Hopefully no more than $700 per month, but it's negotiable.
Do you prefer hi-rise or walk up? Either or.
Are you married or single? Do you have children? 18 years old, single, no kids.
Do you have pets? Not into animals living with me.
Do you want or need a yard? Not at all.
Do you have a car? or need public transportation? I have a car, but I'm hoping there's a decent amount of public transportation. I'm used to taxis.
Do you prefer bustling activity or calm and quiet? Bustling activity!
Specific wants/desires? Bike paths/lanes in the roads for bikers, fitness friendly people, diverse culture, and people who won't ask me to pronounce certain words because of my Brooklyn accent.
As I stated, I'm going to drive down to NC in April to look for an apartment. If anyone could recommend me some good areas/apartments to check in to, it would be appreciated.
Also, how is the job situation? NY's not doing so hot right now, so that's a major reason why I'm moving, even though I am self-employed (being around unemployed people by the masses is not a positive environment).
Any good martial arts centers I can look into? I have a Black Belt in Taekwondo and would like to practice many other arts.

Here's the thing...for the most part Charlotte is a very SUBURBAN city.
Yes, it has a bigger urban core than any other city in NC, so you can get a bit of an urban feel in some places closest to uptown Charlotte, but just know that it won't be anything like Chicago or NYC okay?
I would suggest you research the job opportunities first. Things are loosening up a bit, but Charlotte was hit hard in the recession and yet people still kept flooding in to live here. The end result is that there are lots of qualified people in the city for every one job - competition can be stiff.
Where do you plan to stay when you come for a visit? Do you have any family or friends in the area?

I've been looking on Google Maps and Bing Maps for a little while at Charlotte and the city might not be like NYC, but I think that'll be ok.
I'll take your advice and look into the jobs before I move.
Not too sure where I'll be staying when I visit. Probably just a hotel. I don't have any family or friends from NC.

You are awfully young to be making such a move by yourself (not sure people under 21 can even rent a hotel room).
I do hope you'll have at least $3000 saved to get you started in Charlotte. More if you decide to move before you get a job okay? Let me know if I can answer other questions for you

I like to be independent and I'll figure out how to get a room somewhere.
I have about $15,000 saved, which is why I'm not too frightened by moving before I get a job.

Thank you very much for your help!
Very good! Without a job you will have a tougher time renting an apt, but if you can pay six months in advance in cash you'd probably be fine.
Another option is renting a room in someone's home. That has become very popular in Charlotte since the recession and is cheaper than getting your own apt.

Do most apartment landlords want a certain credit score? Or is it just the six month commitment?
And I'm a little too independent to rent out of someone's home. I did that a while back and it just wasn't my thing, but again, thanks for the suggestion.

They will run a credit check (and charge you about $50 for the application and credit check).
I think as long as you don't have BAD credit you'd be okay to rent an apt. (whereas in other types of situations having no credit can be as bad as having "bad" credit).

I hope the credit thing won't be too much of an issue as I have very little credit (not bad credit though).

To give you a rough idea you can go to creditkarma.com, it will for free give you one of the reporting agencies score (I believe transunion), that will give you a rough idea of your credit score.
