I am thinking of buying a new (more expensive) car. How can I determine how much the annual vehicle tax will be before I purchase the car? I live in Charlotte.

Thanks

Call the tax office and they will tell you if you have the make and model you will be buying.

Easy. Receive bill, pay it.

Actually, I have seen no rhyme or reason. My value has gone up and down and the bill has too. Value up and bill down and vice versa. That is just my experience.

I was thinking that maybe there was a calculator on a state or county website, or perhaps a percentage. It's going to have about a $20,000 value.

Oh ok, that's not too bad, I guess.. I still don't quite grasp this tax on things I've already been taxes on (sales tax).

My car was valued at $44k and my tax bill was $586. Nothing like buying a new car and getting a tax bill 2 months later

They have not established the 2012 tax rate. The city manager wants to raise property taxes so he can build some stuff. In 2011 property tax rate in Charlotte was $1.2536 for $100 assessed value. The first year you own the car, they will set the tax value as the sales price of the car reported to the state.

So if you buy a $35,000 vehicle, your property taxes in 2011 would be $438.76. They will also tack on an additional $30 for the city license tag so your total tax bill will be $468.76. This bill will go down as the car depreciates, but the Charlotte/Mecklenburg tax office IMO, overvalues vehicles.

You will also have to pay a one time $1167 highway use tax to the state.

It's a lot of tax to put a car on the road.
