Are you only looking for a house to rent? If you are looking to buy and rent a condo or townhome you may be able to get in Dilworth, Eastover, Elizabeth below $225. These are great established areas. You might also find something in Cotswold. Southend is also a nice upcoming area. These are just a few more options.

When I started this thread, it was in relation to buying a rental property. At some point though, we will buy for ourselves too(we haven't moved to Charlotte yet). Right now I'm trying to get the lay of the land and narrow down where I should be searching. I kind of always have two tracks going a. where to buy a rental and b. where would we want to live. For a rental property, I'm loosely thinking 225k or less, when we look for ourselves it would be a higher price point. What appeals to me, but I"m not sure if really want to do this, is buy something(at an owner occupied interest rate), live in it while we figure out where we want to be and then turn it into a rental when we buy a home of our own. I wonder if at 225k, could I get enough rent to cover the mortgage in Dilworth, Eastover, and Elizabeth. Thanks for all the input everyone.

You would not be able to buy anything but a condo in any of those 3 areas in that price range. Rent for condos (nice ones) would be anywhere from $1100 a month to $1300 or so. Maybe that answers your question?
