Just make sure you understand their pricing and the cost for you to get your own digital images after the shoot.
We made the mistake of not asking all these questions upfront when we had our newborn photos taken. We asked for a price and they told us $125. We paid that only to find out it would cost us at least another $125 to get access to the images (and that was only for 10 pics). Not sure if these are standard prices but we were shocked.
I would rather just pay someone a set amount (say $150) for an hours worth of time and full rights to all images they took.

We did the professional photographer route a few times and were happy with the results. However, my opinion - invest instead in a quality small camera. Get one with a fast reaction time, including auto focus. Your child will have wonderful, unique expressions that only come out in real life situations. Focus on capturing those.
The photos that still move me years later are the ones that were caught in natural moments. Sleeping, a grin when the neighbor cat cuddles up, the faces when big sister decides she wants to kiss little bro, rock skipping, hanging out on monkey bars, the first reaction to anything new, and I could go on and on.
If you do go the professional route, I recommend getting one really good picture before the front baby teeth fall out. Kids look completely different once the adult ones come in.

Thank you! I found someone for $200 which includes the rights to the pictures on a CD. I appreciate all your great feedback!

I used Destiny Devereux Photography
I know she lives near Ballantyne, but most of her work is on location. You can also get her on Facebook. She was great. Great with kids too. She's also done our family's beach portraits at Folly Beach.
