Hi Everyone – Let me say first of all that I LOVE this forum, everyone is so helpful, and while I know this brand of question gets asked constantly, I am another person hoping for some advice on the areas of Charlotte (or maybe 20-30 min outside of) that would be best for my family and I. I have gotten some great ideas reading other threads, but still find myself a little overwhelmed with the many options that would seem to fit our criteria.

My husband is considering a job transfer to the Charlotte area, currently we live in the Pacific NW (both born and raised here). We are in our late20’s and early 30’s and have a 7 month old daughter. We are really excited at the idea of experiencing something different from the NW, because while we love it, we are both kind of done with the number of cloudy/rainy days.

I work from home, and my husband will be a sales rep for a large company. He won’t really have a set commute, as his territory would cover all of the Carolinas, however, it would seem that he will be spending most of his time in and around Charlotte so that’s why we are looking in/around that area.
Working from home and having an infant, my number one priority is feeling safe. Other things that would be a plus would be something walkable, maybe some cute restaurants and shops, etc.

As far as things we like to do – my husband loves golf, we also like to take frequent walks. When I think of some of our favorite areas that we lived in here in the NW they had cute bungalows and older homes but you could walk to a small library, and there was a street that had a lot of restaurants and shops. We also like community things like art walks, farmers markets, food festivals, etc.

We are totally fine with small towns outside of Charlotte as well, I grew up in a town of 7K and my husband grew up in a town of 1k. We currently live in a city of 200K, and have lived in a different city that was 600K – really doesn’t matter to us as along as we can find that perfect neighborhood.

As far as budget is concerned, we are planning on starting out renting until we are in the area for a while and know for sure we would want to buy there. Our rental budget is $1000-$1500.

Again – I know there is crime everywhere, but I really want to live in an area that I feel safe in, and can go outside with my daughter , and be at home alone and not be constantly worried.

Thanks so much in advance for your thoughts!

Sounds like you want to find a rental home in Dilworth, Myers Park or Elizabeth - all close in older neighborhoods with good walkability.

Expect to pay at the top end of your budget okay?

Keep it near 77 and 85 , so all those neighborhoods do work. The University area could work as well. Areas like Davis Lake.

If he is traveling, you definitely don't want it to take 1 hour to hit the interstate.

That would be awesome, thanks! Its hard to get a feel for a place you've never been to! I do love how charming Charlotte seems to be overall, I love the historical vibe. Is it pretty dog friendly overall? We have two poms and we've lived in un-friendly dog areas before and it can make it difficult as far as finding landlords who are ok with dogs...

I'd say Charlotte in general is pretty dog friendly. There are dog parks where they can run off leash and a few restaurants where you can take them in or have them on the patio with you.

You just described Waxhaw or Matthews. We moved out of Charlotte in 1975 because of the lack of the stability of the neighborhoods there. One would get settled in what was a good neighborhood, government made choices that changed that neighborhood and the people would move out.

We moved to Southwest Union County and have lived here very happily since 1975 and watching the Charlotte news and seeing the same type things still going on makes me realize we did the right thing.

Both great suburbs for sure They won't offer the walkability of closer in neighborhoods, but are definitely nice places to call home!
