anyone have any ideas on how I can entertain my parents this coming weekend? I made dinner plans for one night but that's about as far as I got lol. since they'll be doing a lot of driving I'd like to keep it within an hour of north CLT. anything from a museum to a scenic drive, outdoor cafe, etc...I'm totally open since I'm clueless when it comes to hosting!

thanks!

Take them for a stroll uptown during the day. Be sure to end up at the Levine Museum of the New South - that's a great museum. If they are limber and healthy enough consider doing a Segway tour of uptown!

A little different idea... My Dad came down for a weekend in the Fall and we went to the Reed Gold Mine tour over in Midland (off Hwy 601). We all had a great time there.

I always bring visitors for a ride down Queens Road West (beginning at Selwyn), down to east Blvd. Take a left on East and follow it to Uptown (lots of ways to do this, hard to miss uptown). Then, like Loves said, a stroll thru Uptown and then over to 4th Ward to see the Victorian homes and have a drink/snack at Alexander Michael's.

We do the exact same thing. The drive in is beautiful and people seem to really enjoy it. Alexander Michaels is a very cool place to grab a bite after your stroll. Guess we weren't as unique as I thought.

no no, these are awesome ideas....especially since I'm really not familiar with the south side of town. a nice lil drive from north meck, snake my way downtown for some lunch, that's a great idea!

thanks y'all, keep em coming if you got em. oh, my parents love wine. I was thinking of taking them to the wine vault in the univ area, but when I went there a couple of weeks ago, the crowd that was there was pretty frightening so we won't be going there ever again. I'm sure there are some nice places downtown to grab a glass. can u get pulled over for SWI (segwaying while intoxicated)? hahaha

You might try petit philippe - gourmet handmade chocolates and wine tastings. I took an out of town friend and we had a wonderful time! That could be part of the Queens Rd W/East Blvd route.

Check out the new Greenway park over by the Metropolitan (by Kings Road, very close to Queens Road West). Google "Vivace". It's a newish restaurant right there by the Greenway. Great Italian food and a good wine list. Plus, you can take a nice stroll on the greenway and enjoy a spectacular view of Uptown from the patio.

I've never been here, but have heard of The Corkscrew at Birkdale http://thescrewcrew.com/. There are plenty of places here also to grab a fro yo cone, or have dinner outside. Several Lake Norman parks are a hop and a skip from Birkdale - Blythe Landing, Ramsey Creek, and Jetton. All are parks that are on the water or jet out over the water.

I know you said you'd like to keep the drive rather short, but there are several local wineries north of Charlotte.
Yadkin Valley Wineries: The Wineries

Also this is a great place for light lunch (soup/salad and wonderful french desserts tea/coffee) Amelies French Bakery

Take a stroll around Freedom Park

Take in a play...Discovery or Mint Museum

Have a great visit. I am sure they'll be just happy having quality time with you. I am getting ready to entertain some family for the 4th and we've yet to celebrate this holiday here...fairly new still, so I can relate.
