Hi,

Just wondering if anybody knows what kind of snake this is? We're from up north (imagine that!) and haven't seen this type before. He was in the house, a couple of months after we'd moved in, perhaps living under the rug or something? A few days earlier, I'd killed a worm. Except this worm was blacker than usual and really hard to squish, so, in hindsight, could this have been mama?

Not a good one. It appears to be a copperhead, a less venomous, but still venomous, cousin of the diamond back rattlesnake. There are other snakes that look like copperheads, but from what I can tell, this one in the picture is a real copperhead. There has to be a native on here that can confirm.

I am assuming you must have used a zoom lens to get that photo of its face because if it was me the view would be from me hanging off the chandelier

Now that would be worthy of a picture.

I wonder, do you have mice too? What is the snake eating all this time? Was the house vacant for a long time? I think snakes would prefer to live outside...

As a newbie, and not too afraid of snakes, I can be certen this was not a copperhead.

Here are better photos of a copperhead:

I believe it looks more like a Scarlet snake:

It's hard to tell by the photo, but the dead giveaway would be a more pointed nose.

Either way, I hope you got it out of your home.

One of the first things my new next door neighbor told me was "if you ever have a problem with snakes in your house, call my husband, he loves snakes. He helped another neighbor get one out of her house not too long ago." I replied if I ever found a snake in my house, he'd hear me screaming!

Seriously, I hope this isn't a common problem. We do have a small stand of "woods" around our houses, maybe they like to live there. I have no idea how they can get in the house though.

This looks like a simple corn snake to me. But the picture, other than the face is not clear.
