My wife and I have both recently accepted jobs in Charlotte and we'll be relocating in mid-July. Unfortunately, my job is in the Northeast by UNCC and my wife's job is in Ballantyne. I'm looking for suggestions of areas that are an easy commute for my wife (less than 15-20 min) and not a terrible commute for me (less than 20 miles or and 30 min).
Our budget is about $400K and we're looking for a neighborhood with a lot of other young families with kids, as we have a one year old and don't know many people in Charlotte. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Do you mean Northeastern? That would be uptown. Living right in between Ballantyne and Uptown is one of the best areas to live in Charlotte. Check out areas near South Park Mall and off Park and Carmel Roads. You may want to consider renting initially to get a better feel for the neighborhoods and schools.
I actually mean up by UNCC. SouthPark is great, I agree, but really expensive. We'd prefer a newer, large house for $400K rather than something a little more dated that might require a lot of updates, etc. Thanks for the response though!
With that budget and locations I'd move to Shannamara in Matthews/Stallings (I'd stick on the Union County side for better schools), and Emerald Lake, also in Matthews is also nearby (still Union County schools). Both are close to 485 and an easy commute to both Ballantyne and UNCC.
Thanks for the responses! I have seen some listings in Emerald Lake online and it looks like there are some really nice all-brick homes in the mid to high $300's, which is right in our price range. Does anyone have specific experience with this community? Being that we are relocating and have a young child, we'd be interested in a community with other young families with young children where it's easy to meet people and there are some community social events. Thanks!

I know someone who lives there, there is a very active social committee, I know lots of "ladies nights out" kinds of things, her children are older, so I never asked about kids activities. It's a beautiful subdivision! I drive by Shannamara all of the time, I KNOW there are a lot of little kids there, I see them at the pool!

agree that Matthews good spot, easy commute to UNCC(not heavy traffic), should be about 30 minutes..
