Hi All,
I am thinking of moving to Charlotte, NC from Austin, TX, where I am currently based out of. Please advise me if this would be a good move. Specifically, I need to know whether the move will be beneficial to me in terms of the cost of living in Charlotte, school districts, weather, crime rate (Austin, TX has been very nice so fat) and housing. I am planning to buy a house.

Thanks a lot in advance!

for cost of living you could use this:
Cost of Living Calculator: Compare prices in two cities - CNNMoney

Of course only you know the answer, since it all depends on personal preferences, job, family, etc.

Charlotte area has many great places and lots of transplants however, if required, finding a job could be tricky (depends on qualifications).
But first you might need to know for yourself, if all is good there, why do you want to move?

I can't think of any place I would rather be, if I was a young man, than Austin Tx. It has a ton going for it. Unless you are forced to make this move uhm....well it's your call.

I've lived in both cities and have to say they have two totally different vibes. Austin is a cool city with the colorado river running through it. Austin is all about UT, or should I say that UT's influence is so strong that it gives the city its personality. The economy remains pretty strong and is nearly recession-proof as they learned their lesson from the 80s when the software companies crashed. Austin's motto is: "Keep Austin weird!" Believe me, it would get quite entertaining sometimes!

Charlotte, is a bit more cosmopolitan in its feel with its museums, sports teams and NASCAR. Besides those entities its culture is also shaped, in part, by the strong influence of the banking industry. The diversity in Charlotte is really nice and it is a beautiful city, but the economy, from what I read is struggling right now. However, I believe that will improve and the city will soon be humming again.

The choice then becomes, which city best fits the direction you are going in life. Both are wonderful in their own ways and have a lot to offer.
