I got stung while mowing the lawn today. Looks like we have a good size nest in the ground in our front yard and I have to mow the lawn. The recent rain has caused the grass to get long, so I need to take care of this asap. I'm new to N.C. and so I am wondering what kind of bees/wasps these might be and what remedies for getting rid of them you have tried. I'm not going to do gas.
In MI. the last time I encountered this, I covered one of their holes and then tried everything in the other hole. What eventually worked was hanging out by the whole for a day and when I saw one come out, I sprayed it with water and then stepped on it. I don't really want to do that here.
Also, I tried to pay attention in the midst of being stung as to what they might be (bee or wasp) and they looked more fuzzy to me I think that smooth like the mud wasps we had in Michigan.
Yep, probably yellow jackets. Could be hornets, bur they are quite large. Wait till dark, they will all be in the hole and inactive. I would use hornet spray, but I have heard a five gallon bucket of water and dawn soap will do the trick. We always used gas.
I had a ground nest a few years ago. I think it was yellow jackets. I poured a huge pot of boiling water on the nest.... it worked great! You can try that if your spray didn't get them all.
we had a huge hole full of them and ended up calling a pest control company. My husband is allergic to them so that is why we opted to go with a company.
My boss keeps getting stung, and takes a sick day each time. Thank you, bugs. Sting on !
