Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Park!

It's an easy 90 minute drive west/northwest of Charlotte and you can go swimming in Lake Lure to cool off

That looks to be a great suggestion! I am looking for beaches and lakes to visit that offer swimming. I would also like to find places that allow dog and owner swimming. Are dogs allowed at Lake Lure?

Also looking for ideas for a weekend fishing trip.

OP, you can visit Carolina Beach, NC. It is about a 3.5 hour drive from here. Just make sure you get there early to find parking. I went during 4th of July weekend and had a great time!

Don't think you could have a dog at Lake Lure's beach, though you could give them a call to double check.

For weekend fishing, look at my absolute favorite NC lake - Lake James

Having grown up with this practically in my backyard, it's my all-time favorite:

Lake Marion South Carolina - Santee State Park Camping - Santee State Park

My wife and I just spent some time on the New River just north of the Blue Ridge Parkway, we had a great time.

With this hot weather I recommend that you head towards Sliding_Rock

Looking glass falls is near there and you can swim in that water too.
