It's all relative.

Private schools - Gaston
Public schools - Union
Tax rates are similar
Homes would depend on price range
Both areas have easy access to lots of retail/malls

What lovesMountains said. . . However, if you go out to Kings Mountain, which straddles the Gaston-Cleveland line & cross into Cleveland County, you get better taxes & better public schools. The commute into Charlotte is about the same as some places in Union County & better than others.

This might help. //www.city-data.com/forum/charl...s-schools.html

Thanks.

One thing that I found out recently is that a lot of kids in Kings Mountain will work & save money for school for a couple of years, then go to college. Apparently, the school takes a hit in ratings for this. This came out this year, because someone at the high school was helping the kids get financing & this was the largest group to go directly to post-secondary education.

Also, Cleveland & Gaston both have Early Colleges. Cleveland's is top-rated. Gaston gave theirs to Bessemer City but has taken it back. Also, Gaston's magnet school, Highland Tecchnical is highly rated.

There isn't a clear-cut answer. I'm glad that you posted what you did.

School digger ranks the schools. The site gets updated in March. North Carolina State High Schools - NC School Rankings

Great schools also does not get updated until the following spring.

The state website is the only one that is up to date. The system is changing this school year.

Accountability Services

Nothing beats visiting the schools.

Hard to say because speaking for Union County it is much different in say Unionville/New Salem than Indian Trail and Marvin/Weddington.....

You can say the same for Gaston also...

It would be helpful if the OP could give us a town in each county she would look in....then we can be more helpful.

I think Loves was correct in general terms..

I thought that she summed it up well. The fly in the ointment is Kings Mountain which is in Gaston & Cleveland. The kids on the Gaston side go to Bessemer City for public school which is not the best option, or they go to private. So. . .that's why I put in my 2 cents. Kings Mountain HS outperforms the regular high schools in Gaston County. Highland, in Gastonia knocks the regular high schools out of the game, but it's a magnet school. Cleveland Early College High School is in the pack of early College High Schools tied in 1st Place & Highland is in there too.
