Hi everyone,

I am new to these boards, this is my first post!

I have been reading for awhile since my husband was considering a job in Charlotte. It is looking like he will be taking the job in the next day or two depending on what the company's relocation money is.

After researching for the last month, we both really like the Lake Norman area. My concern is what is the commute time to Charlotte? His office would be on the southern side of the loop. We are moving from Houston so he already has an hour commute but I don't think he would like to do more than that.

We both like the idea of living by the lake and good schools for our kids who are in 4th and 8th grade.

I would really appreciate any helpful information!

Thanks! Jenna

Only you and your husband can answer that question. If I were you I would rent first and see how he feels about the drive.

I would not drive from Mooresville to Charlotte every day for any amount of money.

We are planning on renting first but would like to rent in the area that we plan to buy so that the kids don't have to change schools.

I am just wondering about the time for the commute and whether it is an hour, less, or more.

If the commute is more than an hour, I would love any suggestions about neighborhoods in Charlotte. I assume Charlotte is like any other city with good and not so good neighborhoods. It is hard to get the feel of the neighborhood and schools online.

But I would like to have a few neighborhoods that we know we could afford to rent and later buy in that also have good schools. Especially before my husband commits to a job there.

Do you have a street name that he'll be working from or know the exit off 485 he'd take? There is a squeeze on 485 where there are only two lanes on each direction. This is murder as is the trek to the lake from about exit 11 on 77 during evening rush.

Have you considered Lake Wylie rather than Lake Norman?

His office is on Blairhill Rd. in Charlotte 28217.

I have not yet looked at Lake Wylie, but my husband has mentioned it so I will check that out.

Thanks for the replies so far

Ahh - the loop you were referring to is I-277. I think a lot of posters assumed that you meant south of I-485.

Ahhh. Technically I don't think 277 is a loop.

Google says 30 minutes with no traffic. So an hour might be possible. Besides feedback here, you can go to https://maps.google.com and select Directions and put in the start and finish address. Do this during morning rush and evening rush and it will give you estimates based on current traffic.

You can also see cameras at NC DOT Charlotte NC Traffic Cams

For me I have no tolerance for stop and go traffic if it's 5 days a week. But if you're more patient than me I think the one hour goal might work.

It's name before they gave it an Interstate designation was the "Inner Loop".
