I see your point for electricity, but I think my gas bills were only about $10 in the summer.

Overall I think my bills were pretty similar to Riley's earlier post about his/her rental property, but mine is a little smaller.

Do other appliances that use gas and/or electric power run year round? Yes. Does the amount of their use fluctuate seasonally? Yes. Do these things affect a bill outside of whatever variances the HVAC may cause in the bills? Yes.

The majority of your bill in the winter is your heat, correct? The majority of your bill in the summer is your AC, correct? You'll also notice the OP asked for an average not an absolute.

What else besides maybe a fan fluctuates that much seasonally?

In winter lights are used far more often than in summer. More food is cooked, and cooked inside, rather than cool foods being eaten or cooked outside. Bulkier clothing is worn, so more laundry is done. People are inside moreso than in summer, so more time is spent with TVs, computers, games, etc. And so on.

Gas bill in summer when heat isn't used = $18, Gas bill during the middle of winter when heat is used = $139. Conclusion: Heating bill = $121.

We aren't exactly figuring plans to build some Space Shuttles here.

My gas furnace quit working a month ago. I figured the winter is mostly over, so I'd just tough it out for another month and get better pricing for repairing it in the spring. I'm moving to an apartment in a few more weeks, anyway.

I thought using space heaters might drive my electricity bill way up, but it was not so bad. The bill for mid-Jan to mid-Feb was $72 running an electric space heater beside me almost constantly. Plus a second one to heat my bedroom at night. That includes electricity to dry my clothes, bake an occasional dinner in the oven, and run 1 or 2 computers most of the time.

Last winter I used both a space heater and the furnace (set at 62 degrees for the whole house) and the electric bill was about $58. I'm thinking the HVAC blower must draw a fair amount of current of its own in comparison to "inefficient" radiant space heat.

But this was on a furnace that soon broke down. A HVAC in bad shape can use a lot of energy to produce little heat.
