I am trying to arrange for the kids to attend the Magic Tournament at the Convention Center downtown. We are coming from Greenville, SC. While the kids are playing we want to shop. I hear there are 2 malls in Charlotte. Where are they located in relation to the airport and the convention center? How long of a drive is it from the airport to the convention center in off-peak traffic? I've been to Charlotte once; I drove around aimlessly while my children attended a concert. I'd like to avoid that this trip. Thanks for your help.
There are two malls in the city of Charlotte proper, but including Carolina Place and Concord Mills, it goes to four. From the airport, you can hit I-485 south to get to Carolina Place Mall in Pineville or I-485 north to get to Northlake Mall. From the convention center in Uptown, South Park Mall will be the most convenient. Driving from the airport to Uptown in off-peak traffic will take about 15-20 minutes.
Thanks guys or dolls! I believe when I was there that I happened upon South Park Mall and spent a little time in there. There was also a more rundown mall that I had found but I couldn't bring myself to get out of the car it was that scary to this long-time Chicago girl! lol or not when driving around in the dark! I am using google maps to look around but not knowing the area it all looks like another country on a 14" screen!
We will have lots of time to shop; if you had to pick only 2 of those 4 (or is it 5) which would you choose?
Given the distance you would have to travel, I'd divide my time between Concord Mills and South Park. Concord Mills has the greater (by far) diversity of stores. You can spend all day at Concord Mills. I'm not much of a shopper but I would rather accompany my wife to Concord Mills than any other mall. I can get lost in the Bass Pro Shop for hours and not walk my legs off looking at every "bargain" in every other store.
South Park is a bit interesting for it's specialty shop type arrangement. Although the most interesting thing for me is the Apple Store.

Depends on what you like. Concord Mills is more of an outlet-type mall; you'll see many of the same stores there that are at the outlet in Gaffney. Southpark is a traditional, more upscale mall that resembles a larger, more upscale Haywood. Northlake and Carolina Place are basically just like Haywood.
