Looks like I will need to travel to Charlotte for a face to face interview with a downtown company in the very near future.

Would like to drive down ahead of time over a coming weekend to check out Charlotte and the surrounding areas. Would have 2 or 3 days to look around.

Where do you think we should stay in the Charlotte area to look around while we are there to get a good flavor of the city? What should we focus on?

Is there a good description anywhere of the various neighborhoods surrounding Charlotte?

We prefer to live out of the city but don't know how bad rush hour would be. Ideally we would like to find a ranch home with a mimumum of a 1/2 acre of land within a 30 min commute. Schools aren't a major issue as kids are young adults.

Mortage range would be $150,00 to 250,000. I am not crazy about HOAs unless they do more than boss me around and tell me what I can and can't do on my property.

Are the taxes really much more desireable across the SC line? Where in SC should I look and still have a decent commute?

This would be our first major move - what areas do you think we should look at??

I would look north of Charlotte in the Concord area for a ranch house with some land. I'm not real familiar with SC so I will let someone else comment on that part.

Taxes are lower and gas is too across the S.C. line.

Rock Hill and Fort Mill (two S.C. suburbs) are both around exactly 30 minutes into Uptown, not including traffic.

However, if you're going to be working in Uptown, I wouldn't recommend living in S.C.

Default Updown? Downtown? Is there a map

Is there a good map of the Charlotte areas and neighborshoods?

I'm saying uptown, but I could be completely wrong!

Uptown/Downtown Charlotte are the same thing.

I would try google maps and put in Concord, NC to get an idea of distance to Charlotte. It's really about 20-30 minutes. Just depends on where you find a house in the area.

Have a look at Belmont in addition to Concord. Also some parts of Huntersville may meet your price point and acreage requirement.
