I whould imagine the drum and cabinet filled up with fumes and when the motor started, it sparked enough to set it off. Putting the gasoline soaked rags in water probably made it worse.

I consider myself pretty savvy about such things and if I had spilled gas on a blanket (wh/ is what I thought the article said? blankets, not rags?) I would have probably soaked the blankets for a long time in the washing machine - run it through several times just on soak and spin - and then washed them.

I have washed jeans that had gasoline spilled on them (from filling up lawnmower) and I soaked them several times b/f washing them.

The article did not read as though the items were "soaked in gasoline" (how the heck would one do that, anyway?) I assumed they had used some moving blankets to move a lawnmower, or some other lawn/yard equipment, and then wanted to wash them b/c of some spills . . .

So yeah, call me stupid. I would have assumed some gas spills on some blankets wouldn't cause a problem in a washing machine.

gas is extremely dangerous. I'm pretty handy, but I'm not sure if I would have thought of this. now after thinking about it. I can totally see the motor sparking this

Default Lower Explosive Limit of gasoline is very low

The LEL for gasoline is about 1.5% in the air so there didn't need to be much on the cloth whether blankets or rags or pants. As a former haz-mat team leader we always tested the atmosphere at a scene for the concentration of flammable materials at a scene. Plus the washer or dryer would create a confined space to trap vapors.

Yeah this is why inboard/outboard, inboard boats have blowers in them. You are supposed to run the blower for a couple of minutes to blow any accumulated fumes out of the boat before starting the engine. Else it might blow up.
